Four new EPDs for Salzgitter Mannesmann Line Pipe

Mannesmann Line Pipe GmbH was presented with four new independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for the manufacturing of its steel pipe by the Institute for Construction and Environment (IBU) on the occasion of the BAU 2017 trade fair.

Konrad Thannbichler, head of sales at Mannesmann Line Pipe, describes the context: “We have been pushing the boundaries in optimizing the use of energy in our pipe production to the limit of what is technically possible for more than ten years and through numerous programs. Preparing environmental product declarations as an expression of our sustainable strategy is a logical consequence here. We therefore present them with pride.”

EPDs include information on the consumption of resources when a product is manufactured (e.g. primary energy and water consumption) and on the byproduct emissions into air, water and soil. Product-specific environmental impact (e.g. greenhouse and acidification potential) are also a focal point. EPDs therefore make it possible to compare various products from an ecological standpoint. They are also significant for life cycle assessments and certification systems for sustainable building.

The EPDs were compiled by the main “Resource Efficiency and R&D Coordination” department of Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH. Independent verification was then conducted by the IBU.

This makes Mannesmann Line Pipe a pioneer: The company is Germany’s very first to receive EPDs for water pipe, oil and gas line pipe, line pipe for oil country tubular goods (OCTG), as well as hollow steel profiles. These EPDs are an important criterion for future tenders. Konrad Thannbichler’s comment: “We anticipate that the topic of energy efficiency and environmental compatibility is set to become a more heavily weighted decision or kick-out criterion when tenders are awarded.”
